Asghar has been crucial to the development and establishment of the Islamic Rugby League competition. He responded to a strong need within the community and this has resulted in the development of an innovative project that not only builds the confidence of the participants but contributes to community wellbeing and harmonious relationships.
Lana is a Director on the board of the Queensland PCYC. In 2006 she travelled across Queensland in a voluntary capacity assisting with the development and delivery of services for young people. Lana spent 14 days volunteering on Palm Island, funding the trip herself, working with young people through the PCYC. As well as Lana's significant board responsibilities, she also focuses on rural communities, helping with a successful Bluelight disco in Surat, music concerts in rural towns, and a Family Fun Expo in Rockhampton. All of these events raise valuable funds and unite the community. Lana is 19.
Kristy is 20 and started volunteering with the SES cadets. During Cyclone Larry Kristy volunteered more than 200 hours helping communities particularly in Babinda and Innisfail, putting up tarpaulins, securing roofs, cleaning up yards and working as part of a chainsaw team. Not only does Kristy work tirelessly in the SES she also fundraises and raised over $9,000 in 2006 for the Lions Club through the Miss Popularity Quest.
Mia volunteers across a wide range of organisations. This is evident by the number of groups that nominated her Trinity Anglican School, Lead On Cairns Youth Initiative, Migrant Settlement Services and YMCA Queensland. Mia's volunteering work relates to refugees, the environment, young people and community support. Not only does Mia volunteer at home but also during her family holiday she volunteered at an orphanage in Bali which is now benefiting from her fundraising to repair the orphanage roof. Mia is in Year 12.
Matthew is the DJ and coordinator for the Logan City PCYC junior monthly disco. Not only does he organise, promote and DJ at the disco, he also assists with the outside school hours care facility and front reception. As well as volunteering with PCYC, Matthew also regularly volunteers with the SES, Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Volunteer Coast Guard.
Matthew is 21 and has volunteered full-time for months at a time with BoysTown. Matthew has helped deliver youth programs in Redlands, Beaudesert, Logan and Milton and has actively helped young people to pursue work, study and apprenticeships. In the words of one young person, "The skinny dude with the funny hair really helped". Matthew now works with Kids Help line and continues to volunteer and contribute to the community.
Jodie is 19 and Vice-President of the Queensland Haemophilia Foundation. Jodie, who also suffers from haemophilia, plays a key role in the organisation, organising social and fundraising activities and raising the profile of haemophilia in the community. At a national level, she has been given the role of youth coordinator, mentoring and providing leadership to other young people. Jodie studies medical imaging at UQ and hopes to one day become a haemophilia specialist.
Jess Wellard, Alexandra Gasteen, Sarah Ison and Greg Nelson
VoRTCS is a volunteer-run program of the St Vincent de Paul Society. Jess Wellard, Alexandra Gasteen, Sarah Ison and Greg Nelson make up the young executive for this program. Created and managed by volunteers, VoRTCS (Vortex) aims to assist refugee families settle into their new life in Brisbane, and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts by providing English language and cultural support. VoRTCS maintain over 500 tutors, organise a free event for World Refugee Day, run an arts program, maintain the website as well as deliver in-home English language support.
